NEXT Biometrics today launches it´s newest and 30 per cent smaller touch area sensor for mobile, tablet and notebook markets. At the same time market trends confirm 2015 and 2016 customers moving away from smallest sensors.

In line with previous indications, NEXT Biometrics today launches a touch area sensor with a size of 144 sqmm, compared to the 201 sqmm of the present offering, thus reducing sensor size by almost 30 per cent. This at the same time as major player product launches and direct feedback from multiple NEXT sales projects point to a move away from the smallest sensor sizes.

— Early September World No 3 mobile giant Huawei launched it´s newest top model with a silicon area sensor on the rear side. The user convenient sensor positioning, as well as the sensor size of 92 sqmm (from FingerprintCards AB), is a definite move in the right direction, says NEXT CEO Tore Etholm Idsøe. The Huawei implementation has received acclaim from tech media, as being superior to solutions from competing smartphone brands.

– It´s about maximizing user convenience without sacrificing security, says Etholm Idsøe. – The user demands a sensor that works every day in all common use cases. The fundamentals of fingerprinting dictates a certain minimum sensor size. There are many sources of false rejections, like dirt, water drops, dry, cut or worn fingers. These problems escalate exponentially with reduced sized sensors.

NEXT Biometrics management believe that a sensor like in the recent Huawei top model, should still be both larger and less expensive. – Positioned in the rear there’s space available for a robust sensor size allowing expansions into security and convenience dependent applications like corporate access control, payments and cloud access. NEXT do not have to reduce size to become price competitive. We can offer a user convenient and secure sensor at a price 25-35 per cent below what is being offered by small format competitors today.

On-going discussions with major players seeking added competitiveness in 2015 and 2016 confirm that we are very well positioned in the smartphone, tablet, notebook market segments, says Etholm Idsøe.
